Whoa. Posting this feels feels a much greater victory than it should, because I might have maxed out Dreamwidth's login failure rate whilst tipsy.

Anyway, I'm off on my travels for about a week (depending on how much time I spend bobbing around in London). But I think our hostel has wifi, so in all probability I'll be checking in on Twitter, and you might not notice my absence. Anyway! Everyone should have a good week, and I'll catch up on any emails and so on once I'm back.

Stay safe and have fun!

So this isn’t a particularly structured or insightful reaction post, so much as a random tangle of thoughts. Quite a loooong tangle of thoughts at that.

Argh. For literally half a second of terror there, I just posted a whoooooole load of Ghost Story ramble without a cut tag. If anyone had the misfortune to trip across it before I dived onto the delete button, you have my sincere apologies. Hitting enter when a tag is trying to autocomplete itself does not do what I think it does.

Real Life: I don’t know what happens to me in the summer that makes my social and work calendar kick into overdrive, but it occurs to me that I may not have actually scheduled any time to sleep into July! I kicked it off nicely with a trip to London, and amongst a lot of adventuring and some partying, I introduced my friends to Elizabethan tragedy. I was worried about dragging them to something they wouldn’t enjoy, but they were totally sold on unexpected homoerotica, penis jokes, and Arthur Davril rocking out on a lute with a chorus of puppets, so yay for Faustus!

Dreamwidth: I successfully managed to import my posts onto Dreamwidth without breaking the Internet, and I’m going to start trying to update from there whilst cross-posting to LJ. If you’re over on Dreamwidth and I’ve not found you, then please feel free to add me.

Hi!: On which note, people have been Friending me on LJ in dribs and drabs over the last few months, and I’ll admit to not recognising everyone’s names, which, you know, is a peril of hanging out on memes! If you feel like waving hello, then please feel free to do so, though you’re also welcome to lurk if that makes you happy :-)

ARRRRRRT NOM: So, my epic fangirling of Hendricks isn’t news to anyone, and when Luce was commissioning the ridiculously talented Alexwhitewell for MoC verse art, she also requested a pic for me, because she’s a sweetheart. To which my immediate request was “HENDRICKS PLEASE :-D!” So, duck below the cut if you’d like to see. Pretty safe for work, unless work objects to people holding guns.

Tasty Art )

AO3: I will at some point be cleaning up my DF kinkmeme fills and be posting them to the archive, because I’ve realised how happy it makes me when I spot other people doing it. I can find it! And browse it easily! I, uh, wrote more than I thought I did, and I’ll probably be throwing stuff up there somewhat at random and rather slowly (the process of posting anything anywhere always makes me procrastinate and drag my heels, I am laziness personified) so if you want anything queue jumped, let me know.

DF fic ot_Chicago: I keep peeking at my prompts for [community profile] ot_chicago  in an excited fashion. If you haven’t had a look at the comm yet then run on over, it’s a fannish creation fest that’s all about making prominent use of one of Chicago’s locales in your fic, art, what have you for the Dresden Files. I am, as it happens, not all that awesome at conveying sense of place, but I hang out with some people that really are, and I’m excited about setting out to intentionally play with the kind of things I usually gloss over. Sign up are open til mid-August if you want to join the fun *bounces*.

Guys, as of tomorrow (uh, today... uhm, six hours from now actually) I will be off on a three week road trip around California. If I owe any replies to comments or emails, you’ll hear back from me sometime after the 26th, I promise I’m not ignoring you.

I imagine I’ll be hitting a couple of Internet cafes/wireless hotspots on my trip, so you might spot some gleeful/traumatised flailing on twitter, but I doubt I’ll be around on the meme or keeping up with what’s happening.

Here’s hoping I don’t get fannish withdrawal!

Have fun, be safe, and I’ll see you in a little while.

Another link round up for my kink meme fills! Part 1 is here.

Conclusions from looking at the below 1) RIDICULOUS. 2) I have impulse control problems for prompts that look cracky/could plausibly involve Hendricks 3) I should totally be a bit more adventurous when exploring pairings.

Kink Under the Cut )
grenegome: (Default)
Oh my god, I think the kink meme ate my brain. And as I’m now at the stage where I’m *forgetting* what I’ve written, I wanted to write myself a nice list for reference. Blanket spoiler warning for everything Dresden Files related ever because I’m lazy.

And I’m popping the links below a cut due to sexual references in the summaries.

Fics Ahoy! )

I am easily influenced (and hope [livejournal.com profile] lucia_tanaka only ever uses her powers for good) and now have a Twitter account. If anyone wants to look me up over there, I'm Grenegome as usual. (One of the advantages of picking a user name from  a medieval alliterative romance is apparently that it's not in high demand).

...also, Luce just broke 100K in other things the road to hell is paved with. Go party in her comments.
grenegome: (Default)

I am a little late in bidding farewell to 2010 and hello to 2011, but if we begin years as we mean to go on, then late and disorganised is probably a fairly accurate start to 2011. 2010 was pretty good to me. I did fairly well at work, I’ve fallen in with a group of people whose company I find a hilarious joy, and I’ve enjoyed being myself with enthusiasm. Here’s to continuing in that vein.

In the fannish arena, I got a hell of a lot more active. At the start of 2010, I tripped over the Mentalist kink meme, worked up the nerve to post, and then discovered prompts were awesome. I picked up the Dresden Files, devoured the books, fell for Dresden/Marcone, devoured the fic, and then had fun writing my own. I learned to beta, and might be having a little bit too much fun doing so.

My minor victory for 2011 is that today I just finished the (very very rough) first draft of a Harry/Marcone genderswap fic whose tentative title is Don’t Blink, You Might Miss (I hate choosing titles so much). It currently clocks in at around 49000 words, which once upon a time might have brought me out in a panicky fit of what are you doing?! But now I just take a peek at [livejournal.com profile] lucia_tanaka 's word count and it seems a lot more manageable :-D DBYMM still needs a lot of work doing before it gets anywhere near a beta.

To make these musings post-worthy, here’s a Dresden/Marcone established-relationship drabble written while I was voice finding for their particular brand of contentious domesticity. Set up is that Harry is temporarily staying at Marcone’s and for reasons that don’t need exploring at this juncture, he’s brought Mister and Mouse:

Tiny PG-13 snippet of fic )

grenegome: (Default)

Are the words “Once this ad ends you’ll be returned to your Live Journal experience” provoking a disproportionate reaction OF WRATH from anyone else?

Anyway, have some Mentalist fic that kind of got accidentally written whilst I was playing around in G-chat discussing an entirely different fandom. Guys, if fic for this OT3 exists elsewhere, please point me to it. My happiness will know no bounds.

Title: Aubade (With Me)
Fandom: The Mentalist
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Mashburn/Lisbon/Jane
Warnings: None, really. Unless we count a brief consideration of imagined sexual activity that might have some very light d/s undertones. Un-betad.
Disclaimer: Written for fun, not for profit.
Summary: After returning from his business trip to Europe, Walter Mashburn spends the night with Dirty Harry. His Sunday morning isn’t quite as peaceful as he expected.
Notes: I swear, I didn’t mean to write this. That seems to happen to me a lot in this fandom *facepalm* Concrit welcomed.

Fic below the cut )

I am wondering if it's normal to reassure oneself by loudly singing the kind of advice that might be issued by a more experienced driver, if such a person were actually present in the passenger seat, instead of, well, a handbag.

Waiting at the lights to go around a roundabout where the lanes get a bit confusing… is it weird to belt out “FOLLOW THE LINE! FOLLOW THE LINE! FOLLOW THE LINE!” to the tune of Strangers in the Night?

Maybe it’s because cars have never been quiet places for me. Suddenly being the only person in the vehicle with no idea how to turn the radio on is a little unnerving.

In fic related news, I just hit thirty thousand words on the Dresden Files genderswap thingy… which is boggling and hilarious all at once. I really want to find out how it finishes and then go back and re-draft and find out if any of it is, in fact, any good. Interesting times!

More self indulgent witterings. So, I am writing something, and apparently it is long, and this is a first for me, as I don't usually have the patience/stamina/skill for this kind of writing.

Cut to save your flist from my ficcish musing )

So, in brief: LALALAHHHHHHH I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING.

p.s While I'm here, anyone know if there's a default font size for LJ posts? Because I keep copying over chunks of text from whatever I've been working on a post in without really thinking about the font, and it's made my LJ look kind of messy, with obvious jumps between font style and sizes between posts. I think it's Verdana I want to be using, but the point size escapes me. I suppose I can arbitrarily settle on a size for myself, but I like to know these things.

Fic below the cut )

grenegome: (Default)
This post is me wittering on about my fic. About posting, writing, prompts, commenting, kink memes and kink bingo. Mostly Dresden Files with a pit stop for the Mentalist:

I hate posting fic. Not in a will people like this/will they comment kind of way, but in a copypasting/remember the headings/is this too long for the character limit/where do I put a chapter break/remember to link to all the chapters/have I done the cut-tag right/what the hell size font is this/oh crap tags kind of way. Essentially, it’s fiddly, and I’m a deeply lazy person with a fundamental objection to the kind of careful checking I need to do to make sure I don’t cock everything up. And sometimes I cock it up anyway :-D

I’ve been wondering if posting to the AO3 instead would solve some of this fussing (I’ve never tried it, but if it’s set up by fans specifically for the purpose of posting fic, it MUST be more user friendly). But I have a sneaking suspicion that people comment less there? (And I’m a shameless comment whore, regardless of content. Seriously, you can just be pointing out I’ve abused punctuation and I’ll light up.) I may be entirely misguided in that assumption though. But the kind of commenting I like, that can segue off topic into fannish squee about something completely irrelevant, I kind of feel I shouldn’t indulge in that there. Because it isn’t a blogging forum, it’s an archive for stories and feedback on those stories. I think. Perhaps people do use it in this way and I just haven’t hung out there enough to notice.

I shall continue in my pondering.

Ficcishness

My Redjohnloves you fic seems to actually be done on time. Which is a little, well, scary to be honest. I’m amused that I wrote for the prompt that I took one look at and thought “can’t do that”. Except I kept coming back to the idea. And poking it. And then somehow it got written.

Ramblings on writing to prompts and kink bingo under the cut )

grenegome: (Default)
Slightly overexcited to receive my copy of Dark and Stormy Knights today, as I've been looking forward to reading Jim Butcher's short story from John Marcone's POV like you wouldn't believe.

I REALLY enjoyed this. I was worried I might have hyped it up to myself too much for it to be anything but an anti-climax, but it rocked.

A slightly rambling response to the story lurks under the cut. As well as spoilers for Even Hand, there's an allusion to White Night.

In no particular order:

Title: The Art of War (and Banana Puree)
Rating: G
Genre: Tense domestic fluff, (lightly sprinkled with crack?).
Characters: Jane, Mrs Jane, Baby Jane.
Warnings: None required.
Disclaimer: Written for fun, not for profit.
Summary: Patrick Jane isn’t the only member of his family to earn a living in a less than ethical fashion. Arguments in the Jane household aren’t quite like those of other families.
Notes: I didn’t mean to write this. At all. I'm blaming this one on pensive1. It sprung from a throwaway crack theory joke about Mrs Jane’s background.
And I had to name Mrs Jane and Baby Jane, because I couldn’t quite pull off a narrative from the inside of Jane’s head whilst calling them wife and child.

Title: Twist and Shout (2/2)
Fandom: The Dresden Files
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Harry/Marcone
Warnings: Swearing, sex.
Spoilers: Up to Small Favor.
Disclaimer: These aren't my characters, I'm only playing with them.
Summary: Harry's kind of bad at taking things slow. (Or: Flirt, flirt, flirt. Sex.)
Notes: This follows on from A Hard Day's Night, and With a Little Help From My Friends. It picks up about a minute after the end of the latter.
Huge thank yous to [info]beachkid  for being a fantastic beta and being generally awesome. Remaining errors and oddities are my own.
